As a lifelong "victim," I was taught by my parents and teachers that shame was a way to control my actions. I would be a better person if I experienced shame, and the shame and guilt would guide me to be a better person. WRONG. It takes a lifetime to overcome that mentality. I am creating a Substack soon that teaches the Golden Rule, amongst other things. I think your message is vital to human growth. xxx Jane, Women Own the World.com
Thanks Jane. That mentality lands in the same bucket with the infamous “Catholic guilt” I think. If you get people feeling bad about themselves and tell them they are better off for it….what actually does that accomplish? Control of said people, maybe? Keeping people in line? Our parents probably learned it from their parents, etc. I love the Golden Rule! It’s really the only one we need. Except it’s so difficult to apply it in all instances, especially when we think we are justified about something. At any rate good luck with your substack - it will serve many I’m sure!
